Rabi Season 2026–27: Essential Guidance for Chickpea Sowing

Hello, Farmer Friends!

To achieve a good chickpea crop during the winter season, it is essential to sow at the right time, maintain a suitable temperature, and ensure adequate soil moisture.

Suitable Time for Chickpea Sowing

1. In Gujarat, the period from October 15 to November 15 is generally suitable for chickpea sowing.

2. In irrigated areas of Saurashtra, sowing during the first fortnight of November may be beneficial, as recommended by Junagadh Agricultural University.

3. Avoid very late sowing, as rising temperatures during flowering and grain formation can affect crop yield.

Suitable Climatic Conditions for Chickpea Sowing

Suitable Temperature

An average temperature of approximately 25–29°C is considered favorable for chickpea sowing and seed germination. Local weather conditions and soil conditions should also be taken into consideration.

Adequate Soil Moisture

The soil should have sufficient moisture, but waterlogging must be avoided. Choose well-drained soil for successful chickpea cultivation.

Cool and Dry Weather

Cool and relatively dry weather is favorable for chickpea growth. Frost during the flowering stage and excessive heat during grain filling can damage the crop.

Precautions to Take Before Sowing

  • Prepare the field properly and ensure adequate drainage.
  • Select certified, good-quality seeds.
  • Apply fertilizers according to soil test results and the recommendations of agricultural experts.
  • Treat the seeds before sowing as per local agricultural recommendations.

Special Advice for Farmers: Before sowing, check the temperature in your area, soil moisture, and the weather forecast for the coming days before making a decision.
